Penninghame School Reward Time

Friday saw the last in the current session of Wii Dance, Sports and Fruit Kebabs as part of the reward time for pupils at Penninghame School.

Due to the bad weather, we had some “extras” join us and all the young people enjoyed their time.

The children in the main group were a credit to themselves and to the School.

THANK YOU ALL.

Wigtownshire Self Advocates

BHC were invited by the Wigtownshire Self Advocates group to take part in a conference organised by Progress Scotland Advisory Group.

The conference, which was aimed at adults with disabilities, was held at the Easterbrook Hall in Dumfries and this year’s theme was “Building Safer, Healthier and Stronger Communities”.

We were asked to deliver some interactive activities during their afternoon workshops.  Our Wii Dance and Wii Sport and “Making Your Own Fruit Kebabs” workshop proved to be very popular and everyone had a great time.

Melita Loaring, Local Area Coordinator, said:

 “Hi Nathalie,
I just wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU to you and your team for yesterday.  The workshop was amazing and the work and commitment you all put into it was fantastic.  Thank you for the support and enthusiasm (and sweat!)”.

Jills in the Community

The weather has been kind to us (even if the midges weren’t) and we have finished building the “Dry stane dyke” as a feature wall in the Hospital gardens at Newton Stewart.

This is a great achievement for all the volunteers that participated and a special thanks to Clare, Tracy and James. We will be returning to the gardens later in the summer to maintain the wall.

Safety At Home with John Harvey, Fire Chief

The group has now settled into our new premises in Penninghame, and Pam has found a new corner for her gentle exercise group!  Today we had an informative talk about fire safety, with a lively Q & A session afterward, and many of our members signed up to have a home visit to make sure their homes are safe and sound.

Member Rob Harford said:

“John gave a very interesting talk on fire safety in the home.  He highlighted the importance of everyone having their own escape plan - in case of fire - and recommended a dummy run.  Request forms for home visits and advice were made available for anyone  in need of smoke detectors or to address specific worries. With a question and answer session afterwards, I think everyone came away a little wiser.”

Promoting the Programme

“I went along to give a short presentation to the Merrick and Cairnsmore patient participation groups.  It was great to be invited to talk about our SMP programme and get feedback about the needs of the community and how we can support these.  Also to have the opportunity to talk within a professional health care setting about how we can offer support to carers. Around 80% of carers do not know what support is available to them, and often only find out when their own health has deteriorated.  Thanks to everyone who came along, and especially to Aileen and Sandy for inviting me.”

Port William Youth Group

It was a fine sunny evening when The Wii Roadshow hit Port William. The young members of the youth club enjoyed both Dancing and Playing Sports. They were also introduced into making their own fruit kebabs and sampling 7 different fruits. This went down very well and a great time was had by all.

Penninghame Reward Time

Monday Club – Access Art Project

Some of our members had a wonderful time last week taking part in the art project, which was held in the Art Room, at the Community Centre, in Newton Stewart.  We were introduced to 2 printing techniques by James and Steven, from Access Art, with the aim of exploring ideas based around our environment. The daily workshops were well attended and the work produced was of the highest quality! As a celebration of our achievements, we aim to exhibit the artwork at various locations throughout the area, starting with the Newton Stewart Library next week, so please come along and have a look at our “masterpieces”!

Here are some of the delights that are on display until 15th June.

Kirkinner Youth Group

It was the turn of Kirkinner youth group, the young ones, to “Have a go” at Wii dance and Wii sports. The group all enjoyed their experiences. They were then given instruction on making their own Fruit Kebabs and very soon, all the fruit was devoured. A great evening was had by all.

Cooking Events for Youth Groups

Last night was the final round of Chicken Fajitas for the youth groups in the area.
Wigtown was the venue and 5 young people excelled in their cooking skills as well as learning a little about not wasting food.

We will be contacting all the youth groups after the summer to see if the young people would like further input from the BHC team.

Newton Stewart Hospital Project

The Jills of all Trades have been busy in the past two weeks continuing with the “Dry Stane Dyking” at Newton Stewart Hospital

At last the weather has been kind enough to let us continue and virtually finish this project. If all goes well, the wall will be completed in the next two weeks!!  Weather permitting!!

Blethering On with Lesley Robinson

Lesley Robinson gave a really funny, informal talk about her life growing up in Northern Irelandand then moving to this area and bringing up 12 children.  She had loads of anecdotes about visitors (two and four-legged) and kept the group very entertained.  Mona came along with her and sang some lovely old songs, and the members were needed no encouragement to join in.
