Monday Club Poster February to March 2019

Monday Club

On Monday 21st January, Robert McQuistan delivered a talk on local places and how influences on naming from Gaelic, Scots, Norse and Northumbeland, river names have a big influence on naming too. The history of Gaelic in Dumfries and Galloway dates from circa the 9th century, the people spoke a Celtic language, similar to that which has survived in Wales today. A very interesting talk and sparked questions on why places were named.

At our next meeting on 4th February we are having "Let's Talk Bags" with Alison from Dumfries & Galloway Library Services.

Monday Club - Healthy Cooking

The activity for the session was Healthy Cooking, where Building Healthy Communities spoke about healthy sized portions of food and then all the participants had an opportunity to cook a simple, yet nutritious, one pan meal.

The meal was based around proteins in the form of Chicken and Nuts, cooked with vegetables and orange juice. To add flavour, chilli and soy sauce were used. The group then took this home and would have cooked some noodles or rice as the main carbohydrate for their meal.
A great time was had by all!

The Monday club is open to all adults and runs every 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month at Penninghame Church Hall from 10.00 – 12.00. For further details, please contact:

Heartstart - Police Scotland Youth Volunteers Stranraer (PSYV)

This well attended group has been running for about 4 years at Stranraer Academy as an “after school club”. Members throughout the summer attend events across the region, assisting police with stewarding etc.; and tend to be long term members!   Several have joined Police Scotland on leaving school.
Heartstart (Newton Stewart) have been involved with their training over that 4 year period and, with the latest “batch” being trained on Tuesday 15th January, all members of the team are now proficient in Emergency Life Support. As an after school club, resources are very tight and there is no money for external instructors, such as ourselves to come in. We are all very grateful for the support of the NHS Endowment fund in paying for the travel expenses of our volunteers.
