Monday Club
At todays Monday Club, we had Jennifer Brodie who came along to give us a demonstration on how to make animals out of facecloths. We all had a go at making bunnies. We added tails, eyes and some ribbon to bring the facecloths to life, we then added a chocolate egg to its belly. Thank you Jennifer for a very interesting morning.

Isle of Whithorn Arts & Crafts
The first Wednesday of each month is used to demonstrate a new craft and this month it was to show the group how to work with FIMO modelling clays. Lynn Wheatley showed the techniques needed to produce a number of different articles using this brightly coloured clay, which can then be baked in a conventional oven. Many of the members took the opportunity to model anything from fairies to buttons and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
The Arts and Crafts Group meets each Wednesday at 12.30pm to 3.00pm at
St Ninians Hall in the Isle of Whithorn and new members and visitors are
welcome to come along and see what happens. Next month’s new craft, on
Wednesday 6th March, will be on Beadwork, but new members can try
out painting, drawing and knitting at any time. For more details contact
Building Healthy Communities on 01671 404267. The group is supported by
Kilgallioch Wind Farm Community Fund.

Monday Club 4th February.
Monday Club 4th February another successful morning with Alison Burgess hosting “Let’s talk Bags”.
Alison Burgess gave an introduction into the concept of the Bags, the bags contained different objects to incite the four senses. After the introduction, Alison passed around a bar of Wright’s Coal Tar Soap to smell also a box of Izal toilet tissue. In her school bag Alison produced a school bell, chalk and chalk board, ruler and the dreaded strap. These objects started conversations and memories of school days. Alison has various bags filled with objects associated with subjects such as sport and food and as we had seen school days. Alison had also brought in copies of the Galloway Gazette dating back to 1977 a time when the Gazette was a broad sheet.
Alison asked the group if they would like to do a Newton Stewart bag to contain photographs, words, traditions, music, drama etc that comes from people of Newton Stewart. Alison played a recording of a gentleman who served in the WW2 and he spoke of German planes flying over and waving to British soldiers, the day was December 25th, of course everyone speaks of the trenches and Christmas Day, would anyone have known about the flyover? A lady also has been recorded talking about her time in the Home Guard and the taking over of Dalbeattie.
All this has got the group wanting to do something towards the history of Newton Stewart.
Jack & Jills Community Shed
If there is sufficient demand, Building Healthy Communities, working with South Machars Community Centre, intend opening a Community Shed in Whithorn. This is like a Mens Shed but also for women and young people. There would be a variety of handicrafts and, importantly, a kettle andcoffee table. It is intended to open 5 days a week, with morning and afternoon sessions. There are many health benefits from attending this initiative, from increasing physical fitness by walking from home to the Shed, becoming actively engaged in what is going on or simply combating loneliness by spending time with like minded people.
