Isle of Whithorn Youth Group - Healthy Cooking

Last night, the young people of the Isle were involved in cooking a pot of Leek and Potato
Soup!!- being something that they had chosen to cook.

The session started with frantic chopping of vegetables before cooking and blending.

It was a great effort by all and although some did not like the taste, as always, anything you cook and eat for the first time is a learning experience. For the simple recipe, see below.

Leek and Potato Soup

Ingredients:                                                               Method:
1 tbs oil                                                                       Heat the oil in a large pan and add the onions, potatoes
1 onion, sliced                                                             and leeks.  Cook for 3-4 minutes until starting to soften.
2 leeks, sliced                                                              Add the vegetable stock and bring to the boil.
4 potatoes, small and cubed, skin on.                            Season well and simmer until the vegetables are tender.
1 litre vegetable stock                                                  Whiz with a hand blender or in a blender until smooth.
Salt and pepper                                                           Serve with a squiggle of cream.
Cream to serve                                                            (If you prefer lumpy soup, don’t blend it)

Thanks to the Youth Group volunteers and to Tracey for her time.

Next Healthy Eating session is at the end of June with a barbecue before the summer holidays.

The massages were very relaxing and calming, some of us even nodded off.
Thank you Rosemary

Thanks to Pam for her gentle exercise, we also had a dance to the music. Very enjoyable session.
On Monday 9th May we have Louise Morley from First 4 Feet, a Foot Health Practitioner and Pam with gentle exercise.

Next month appears as busy, but, if you or any group are interested in a FREE 2 hour certificated Heartstart course, then please contact the office.

Jills in the Community - Garden Project

In an attempt to tidy up and make secure a garden in Whithorn, the Jills were today on Fencing Duty!!

Posts were fitted and fencing stretched to replace a rotten wooden fence. The finished product looked much tidier and far more secure!

This fencing project will continue for a few more sessions, weather permitting.

Transforming Lives Through Partnerships - Douglas Ewart High School

On Monday, Douglas Ewart High School held an event to show all the partnership working that happens in the School. This was in recognition of  being short-listed for the "Transforming Lives Through Partnership Working" awards, supported by Education Scotland.

The judges for the award talked to partners and pupils about the impact of being involved with the School and how this affects the lives of the children and the wider community.

The event was very well supported and we were well looked after with some great cakes!!

Well done everyone!!

Spring, after the Garden project _ Jills in the Community

The garden that was developed at the end of last year, has survived the winter and now needs refreshing to start the new season. Mary is starting, removing all the weeds from the flower borders before the fencing can be repaired. The Jills intend to do this in the next couple of weeks.

If there is anyone interested in joining the Jills in the Community project to assist people with simple DIY jobs around the home, then please contact the office.
