Monday Club
By popular demand, the first taster session of the new Monday Club on 28th January was
"chair-based exercise" to music, ably led by Pam. The activity was very well received and everyone said they really had fun doing it. The final section of the hour-long activity included a potted version of the Paso DoblĂ©, which got people on their feet where appropriate, and elicited a collective and joyful shout of ‘Ole’ at the end! Well done and thanks to Pam!
The Monday Club is open to carers, anyone living with a long term condition, and older people. We can support you in taking back control, improving your health and well being and living life on your terms.
The club meets again on 11th and 25th February, 10.15am – 12.15pm, Newton Stewart Golf Club. Contact us for more details. 01988501111

Everyone completed an evaluation of the activity, with loads of positive feedback. Benefits noted included “getting out, meeting people”; “extended my range of movement”; “enjoyed the atmosphere and social side”; and people felt “energised, refreshed and loosened up”.
There was also time to sit and chat over a cup of tea, and have a lovely hand massage from Jo. This part of the activity was appreciated just as much as the exercise. In fact, some people come along to the club for the social interaction as much as for the activity, as they feel a bit isolated.
Some folk were able to stay on for lunch afterward, which provided a further opportunity to chat and make new friends. (We can definitely recommend Jim’s home-made soup!)
The team are delighted at the response to this new event, and further taster sessions are being organised to meet the needs of the group.

Isle Of Whithorn Youth Groups
BHC went to the Isle on Wednesday night for an evening of
Wii Dance, Wii Sports and Fruit Kebabs. The younger group of children (4 –
8) all enjoyed themselves in the activities and were keen to get involved.
The older group were encouraged to organise themselves and after a nervy start, all joined in showing their dancing skills as well as playing tennis, bowling and boxing.
Gangnam Style was a great success with both age groups.

News For the Monday Club
The first meeting of the “Monday Club” had a good turnout, with 28 people coming along to find out more about self-management opportunities within their community. It was explained to the audience that in true self-management style, the idea for the new group had been put forward by a BHC volunteer, so the turnout and response was particularly encouraging.
Nathalie and Karen introduced the new initiative, and further information was given by volunteers and workers representing different health and well being community activities. It was an informal event, with lots of opportunity for discussion and catching up.
Everyone really enjoyed the event, and was happy to contribute their ideas for activities they would like to see being established. A variety of suggestions was put forward by BHC, with others coming from the group members. Evaluation of the topics established that Gentle Exercise/Tai Chi and Healthy Eating were the most popular. And the team was delighted that sixteen people indicated their intent to register for the new group. Further participants registered for the mailing list.
On reflection, the team decided to advertise the event further, and to highlight the fact that this will be a free service. They also felt that as some of the potential group members were hard of hearing, this would need to be addressed for future talks etc.
The group will meet again on Monday 28 January. See poster below.

Self Management Programme
We held our first meeting of the “Monday Club” on 14th January at Newton Stewart Golf Club to establish a new fortnightly self-management group that will offer FREE information and FREE activities to older people, carers, people with long term conditions and other interested parties.
The event was very well attended, with lots of opportunity for informal discussion and catching up. An interesting variety of topics were highlighted addressing a range of different needs. Top of the list for the moment appears to be various forms of gentle exercise/Tai Chi, and also healthy eating.
YOUR new ‘Monday Club’ meets again on Monday 28 January, 10.15 am – 12.15 pm at Newton Stewart Golf Club. Please come along, bring a friend, or contact us for more info.
Huge thanks to all who attended, and especially to Jim from the Golf Club, who did an outstanding job of organising everything for us.
