Jills in the Community - Kaos Cafe

Yesterday saw the completion of the decorating in the main room of Kaos Cafe in Wigtown. This little project has involved the Jills, along with Youth Workers from the CLD service as well as young people from the youth group, preparing the doors, walls, windows and woodwork for re-painting.

The Jills were in the Cafe yesterday, applying 2 coats of gloss paint to the skirting boards and doors.

Later in the year, an artist is coming in to design a new mural for one wall and the Jills will be returning to re-decorate the kitchen area.

Well done ladies.... A great effort!!!

Jills in the Community - Kaos Cafe Wigtown

The Jills have been asked to assist the young people from Kaos Cafe in Wigtown with the redecoration of their club room. This is being done in partnership with Community Learning and Development.

The task has involved washing and sanding walls and woodwork in preparation for undercoating. The young people have been involved in all stages as shown in the photos.

After preparation, a first undercoat was completed, including a colour change. Compare the photos!

The Jills are revisiting the cafe on Wednesday to give the woodwork a final coat of White Gloss paint. The finished job will be available to be seen next week.

Well done to all who have assisted. A new carpet and some new furniture will finish it off within the next few weeks!!.

Kirkinner after School Youth Club

A new After School youth club has been started at Kirkinner School and Building Healthy Communities were asked to come along to give a talk and provide some fruit kebabs for the children to try. As can be seen, all the fruits were soon eaten!!

The children were asked if they would like to try cooking their own tea in the future and the response was " Yes Please". We will be visiting the youth group again after Easter.

Isle of Whithorn Youth Club - Healthy Eating

The young people at the Isle of Whithorn had the chance to make a really healthy Chicken Tikka Masala last night. With all fresh ingredients, the recipe was followed and was really successful as seen in the photos below.

Well done to everyone who attended, it was really good. Thanks to the Isle volunteers and Tracey for their assistance on the night.

If you would like to try this recipe, see below:

Chicken Tikka Masala
Ingredients for the Chicken Tikka.
(This serves about 6-8 people)
1 teaspoon ground cloves            1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 heaped teaspoon paprika          1 heaped teaspoon garam masala
6 cloves of garlic                         1 thumb-sized piece of ginger
1kg chicken breasts                     3 fresh green or red chillies
Juice and zest of 1 lemon             6 heaped tablespoons natural yoghurt

Method
Put the cloves, cumin, paprika and garam masala into a large bowl.
Finely grate in the zest of the lemon, squeeze in all its juice, crush in the garlic, peel and finely grate in the ginger.
Add the yoghurt and 1 tsp of sea salt.
Cut the chicken breasts into 5cm chunks, then massage all that flavour into the meat.
Skewer up the chicken chunks, mixing them with lemon wedges and chunks of green or red chilli, but don’t squash them together too much.
Place on a tray, cover with cling film and marinate in the fridge for at least 2 hours, but preferably overnight.
Cook under the grill until brown at the edges.

Ingredients for the Masala sauce:
1 small onion                              2 cloves of garlic
1 fresh red chilli                          oil
2 teaspoon ground coriander        1 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon paprika                      1 teaspoon garam masala
2 tablespoons ground almonds    ½ tin chopped tomatoes
½ chicken stock cube                  50gm grated coconut
100 ml water

Method
Peel the onions and garlic, then finely slice them along with the red chilli.
Put it all into a large pan on a medium heat with a lug of oil and cook for around 5 -10 minutes, or until golden, stirring regularly. (do not allow to burn)
Add the ground coriander, turmeric, paprika and garam masala.
Cook for 2 minutes, then add and toast the almonds.
Pour in the tomatoes, crumble in the stock cube and add 100ml of boiling water and the grated coconut.
Cook for 5 minutes and then add the cooked chicken tikka.
Simmer for a final 10 -15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Serve with Rice or Naan bread.

Update on Our Blogmeister, Luke.

As most people are aware, Luke Utting, the volunteer who developed this Blogpage, started work in October 2015. We at BHC are very proud of Luke's achievements over the years. Luke has some news that he wishes to share with everyone.

Since leaving Building Healthy Communities as a volunteer, I have been working as a Christmas temp at Whisky Broker Ltd.  My work consisted of dramming and labelling whisky into 30ml glasses which were used for advent calendars and Christmas crackers.  When my temping position finished, at Christmas, my boss offered me a full time job with his company, starting in January 2016. This made my Christmas!

For the first time in many years I have obtained a job which I love and I have been accepted into the whisky brokers family.  This is all thanks to BHC for helping me find the confidence to push myself into employment. I owe so much to them.

Thank you so much. I will miss my volunteering but I know that everyone will be happy for me knowing that I am finally happy.

Thanks guys

Blogmiester Luke

We all wish Luke every success in the future!

What with the weather being so cold, the Jills have been asked to repaint the interior front windows of the BHC office to keep them warm. It will also hone their skills of sanding, filling in holes and use of sealant.

These photos show the windows being  prepared for a new lick of paint that will be applied next week.

Lots of preparation!!
