Date for your Diary - Invitation to launch of VOICE (Mid Galloway) Project

“VOICE” Mid Galloway (Volunteering Opportunities in Community Engagement) is a new pilot project led by partners from the Machars Area Partnership. The project is funded by Voluntary Action Fund (Scotland).  Recent evidence from the “Resilient Communities” Sub-Group of the Wigtownshire Health & Wellbeing Partnership identified that there were a number of agencies and service providers delivering and facilitating a wide range of training opportunities for their own service users and volunteers in isolation.Through the “VOICE” project organisations working with volunteers in Mid Galloway will work together to open up, identify and develop further training opportunities across the Machars.  The project will enable partners to share skills, resources, avoid duplication and help raise awareness and promote the benefits of volunteering to individuals and local communities.

The launch of the Project will be held on Wednesday 4th June and road show sessions will be held in:

Whithorn Community Centre 10.00am – 12 Noon

Wigtown County Buildings 2.00pm – 4.00pm

Belted Galloway, Newton Stewart – 6.00 – 8.00pm
(Tea, Coffee and light refreshments will be available at all sessions)

Key Partners will host market places on the day, there will be opportunities for further networking with additional partners, and for potential volunteers to find out a bit more about the project and sign up.. Further information on the agenda for the sessions will follow – but please get the date in your diary - we look forward to seeing you all there!! ..
If you would like to be involved, host a market place or require more information please contact:

Monday Club 19th May 2014

16 members attended today’s “Healthy Cooking on a Budget” session with Dave and Luke from Building Healthy Communities. The group were treated to demonstrations of Sweet Potato and Carrot Soup, followed by 2 healthy Chinese style dishes, Chicken Fried Rice and Sweet and Sour Chicken. Members were given tips as to how to cost the dishes and make the best use of their resources. Everyone tried and tasted the dishes and all agreed they were very tasty and easy to accomplish. They were all given the recipes to try at home for themselves. Many thanks to Esme for producing the monthly Newsletter.

The next meeting will be on 2nd June, which is the return of Pam with Gentle Exercise to Music, followed by a short Heartstart Course with David and Anne Hirst. Looking forward to seeing everyone there. For more information on the Monday Club, please call Building Healthy Communities on 01988 501111

Monday Club

Last month, the Monday club sat down and planned the activities for the rest of the year. A good mix of activities including cooking, visits to a raised bed garden and talks from health professionals are all on the agenda for the rest of 2014.

The new programme kicked off with a short gentle exercise session with Pam, followed by a quiz, devised by Peter and Sandra. Questions ranging from “Who was the actor that played the first Dr. Who” to “How many children were in the Von Trapp family?” were fired in quick succession to the five teams taking part. The quiz was a great success with the winning team “I Don’t Know” being the victors. All teams were presented with a small basket of fruit for their endeavours. A big thank you to Peter and Sandra for their input into the day.

The next meeting is on Monday 19th May where there will be a short cooking demonstration including a soup and 2 Chinese style dishes.

Jills of all trades

The Jills have started designing and making a set of large gates for a local service user in the area. Before this could happen, they built a scale version to get practice in cutting angles and making things “Square”. The real gates have been started, further pictures to follow next week.

Laptop Heaven

A presentation was made on Tuesday by Sue Reedman, Chair of the Machars Area Partnership, to members of “Laptop Heaven”. Machars Area Partnership is a voluntary group made up of community volunteers, voluntary and statutory organisations. They assist with volunteer led projects in the area as well as supporting the work of Building Healthy Communities. The “Laptop Heaven” group was set up 3 years ago and is run in partnership by the Riverside Centre and Building Healthy Communities. The aim of the group is to assist members of the Day Centre to understand modern technology and solve any issues that may arise with their laptops, computers and tablets. The addition of a wireless printer will allow all members to experiment with printing documents and photographs with guidance from Luke, the tutor, before printing items at home.
